The bowl "Swan Service Dish Count Brühl's Alliance Coat of Arms" is part of the "Swan Service", consisting of over 2,200 parts, which Johann Joachim Kaendler, Johann Friedrich Eberlein and Johann Gottlieb Ehder created at MEISSEN between 1737 and 1742. The large, oval bowl impressively combines all aspects of Meissen porcelain art. In the centre stands, pure white like the porcelain and designed as relief, the pair of swans giving their name. It is surrounded by rhythmic waves, shells, reed and a heron. Artfully twisted branches with foliage as handles. Finest Indian flower painting and the alliance coat of arms of Count von Brühl decorate the border with lush gold edge. Limited to 50 pieces.
Dining was never done with such pomp as at the home of Heinrich Count Brühl (1700–1763) and his heirs. Making this possible was the “Swan Service”, a peerless masterpiece of baroque porcelain art produced between 1737 and 1742 at MEISSEN® by Johann Joachim Kaendler, Johann Friedrich Eberlein and Johann Gottlieb Ehder. Each of its well over 2,000 parts is adorned with relief decoration, shapes and figures from the worlds of water and Greek mythology. The service owes its name to the relief-moulded swans that glide across its plates. Our large oval dish impressively fuses all facets of MEISSEN® porcelain art. Everything centres around a pair of eponymous relief-moulded swans of a pure whiteness to match that of the porcelain. Waves lap rhythmically about, augmented by seashells, rushes and a heron. Leafy branches twisted to one side have been adeptly applied as handles. Utterly exquisite oriental flower painting and the combined arms of Brühl decorate a rim sumptuously edged with gilding. To paraphrase the celebrated porcelain connoisseur Otto Walcha, without the “Swan Service” the rococo period would have been a whole lot duller. And this standalone piece is fresh testimony to the ability of great art to transcend time.
